Research degrees in Drama

About the PhD programme

Research students in the Department of Drama study in one of the United Kingdom's leading centres for performance research. We welcome applications from graduate students who research in any of our areas of expertise.

Research students play an important part in Drama's collaborations with leading arts organisations, including the Barbican, Shakespeare's Globe, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Actors' Touring Company, the London Film Festival, LIFT, and AfroReggae.

Research Areas

Prospective PhD students are encouraged to consider the wide variety of academic research areas covered by the Department of Drama. Research by our staff, postgraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, distinguished visiting researchers, audiences, and other members of the public is focused through five main – but overlapping – strands of research on:

  • Materials and Materialism in Theatre and Performance
  • Global Majority and Diasporic Performance
  • Socially Engaged Performance Practices
  • Live Art and Canonicity
  • Feeling Medicine

Please visit the Departmental research page for more information on the Research the Department is involved in and the Research Groups it hosts.

The application process

To help us advise you as effectively as possible, we encourage prospective applicants to make their initial enquiry, prior to making a formal application, by completing the Dept of Drama PhD Enquiry Form and emailing it to the Director of Graduate Studies for Drama. They will advise you on your project and answer any queries you might have about pursuing doctoral research in Drama at Queen Mary. Following this, and once you have identified an academic with research interests related to your proposed area of research, you should contact them to discuss your proposal and gain their agreement to act as your doctoral supervisor. Following this you can then submit your formal application, naming your proposed supervisor in the appropriate section of the application form.

PhD students normally begin their studies in September. There are no set deadlines for applying for a research degree, but we would recommend you apply no later than June.  However, if you are applying for a funded place you will need to submit by the funding deadline - please see the further information section below for information about our funding awards and their deadlines.  Full- and part-time study is available. Please select the entry point below for either full-time or part-time study to access the on-line PhD application system.
