About the PhD programme

The PhD programme  in Applied Linguistics, based within the Language Centre attracts outstanding scholars, and competition for places and for funding is at the highest level. PhD students work closely with academic staff at the very forefront of the discipline and are part of a well-resourced, intellectually stimulating, friendly and supportive environment.

Research Areas

The Centre is interested in receiving applications in a wide range of Applied Linguistics Areas.  Particular research strengths are focused on the study of institutional communication (for example, health and science communication), multi-modality, the relationships between politics, language and culture, and electronic communication. The application process

Applicants are expected to contact a member of staff with interest in research areas relevant to your proposed topic area to discuss your proposed research and gain their agreement to act as your doctoral supervisor prior to making a formal application.  Details of staff and their research expertise may be found on the programme web-page.  Your application must be accompanied by a research proposal outlining the aims and academic context of the research.

PhD students normally begin their studies in September/October, but entry in January or April is also considered. Please be aware, if you are applying for a funded place you will need to submit by the funding deadline - please see the further information section below for information about our funding awards and their deadlines.  Full- and part-time study is available.
