What inspired you to study Molecular Cell Biology at Queen Mary?

I chose Molecular Cell Biology for my master’s because I really value the broad research and career opportunities it can offer me in the future. While studying Molecular Biology and Genetics during my undergraduate studies, I was particularly interested in neurodegenerative diseases however I wanted to keep my research field broad, yet still connected to what I truly enjoy. Through studying on the MSc Molecular Cell Biology programme , I aim to further develop my skills in the lab, build a solid scientific foundation, and eventually focus on Neuroscience for a PhD, which excites me greatly!

Can you share a highlight of your programme so far?

My absolute favourite moment from our programme so far was our lab week where we produced Green Fluorescent Protein in E. coli. One of the key reasons I chose this program was because I greatly enjoy working in the lab and I absolutely loved all the steps, which included: preparing our own protocol, personalising the experiment, and eagerly waiting the next day to see the results. I’ll never forget the happiness I felt when I saw my tubes glowing green at the end of the experiment!

How have you found the facilities?

The buildings and labs at the Mile End campus are truly excellent. The fact that everyone has their own workstation, along with the variety and modernity of the equipment, is a huge advantage. Furthermore, the labs are in bright, spacious areas which makes the entire experience more enjoyable and shows that Queen Mary has really thought about their students' experience.

What have the highlights been so far from your time at Queen Mary in general?

One of the biggest highlights for me was spending time with my friends in the QMSocial area on the Mile End campus. Whether it’s after classes or during short breaks, having dedicated spaces to play games, chat, and just unwind together is so important and means that the campus has a warm and fun atmosphere. It’s become one of the places where I most enjoy spending time as I can relax and connect with people in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

In what ways has your programme prepared you for your future career or further academic pursuits?

It has been incredibly beneficial both in terms of lab and more general academic skills such as presentation, literature research, and critical thinking. In addition to the wet labs, the programme also had valuable workshops on programming, data analysis, and the principles of the microscopes. The fact that our first semester was so full and productive motivates me even more for the future.

What advice would you give to a student thinking about applying for the MSc Molecular Cell Biology?

If you enjoy wet lab work, are curious about cellular mechanisms, and dream of a career in this field, apply without hesitation! While studying at Queen Mary, I’ve noticed that they place a strong emphasis on research-informed teaching, which is a huge advantage both academically and professionally for the future, and makes for a truly rewarding experience.
