Research in Film

Film at Queen Mary is a leading centre of research in film cultures, film philosophy, decolonising film, film and ethics, and film practice.

Research in Film

In REF2021 Film was ranked 1st in the country for its research outputs. Our research is contemporary focused and displays an ethical commitment to social justice.

We explore how film is constructed and how it changes over time, where it travels to and how it takes effect, drawing on the various cultures of avant-garde, national, world and popular cinema. In addition to the areas listed below we also contribute to the School’s Visual Culture research group.
