MRes/PhD scholarships

School Studentships

The School offers generous financial support to accepted candidates on a competitive basis. Full and partial 2+3 and +3 funding options are available.

Eligibility

School studentships are available to all students wishing to join the MRes/PhD programme in the School of Economics and Finance.

Value

The funding package includes an annual stipend and fee waiver for all 5 years, with an enhanced annual stipend/TAship package during the 3 PhD years. Annual stipends are updated very year and this year is c. £20,622.

How to apply

There is no separate studentship application process, the School will nominate candidates for the studentships based on academic merit. Please indicate on your Queen Mary application form that you wish to be considered for Queen Mary funding.

ESRC LISS DTP

The London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) will award a number of ESRC-funded postgraduate research studentships to support research and training in the social sciences at our three partner institutions – King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College. These are available for three or four years full-time (or pro-rata as part-time studentships), either as:

  • as a one-year MRes followed by a PhD (‘1+3.5’)*, which candidates apply for through our Open competition; or
  • as a three-year PhD (‘+3.5’), for candidates who already hold an MRes qualification

Eligibility

Studentships are available only to students who have already been accepted into our 2-year MRes programme, from Year 2 through the Ph.D. Please see the ESRC eligibility criteria before applying.

How to apply

*Students who have been accepted onto our 2-year MRes programme can apply for 1+3 funding after they have enrolled.

 

HSS Studentships

Queen Mary offers research studentships to the value of around £12 million to support PhD students each year. These include our own prestigious Queen Mary Postgraduate Research Studentships. SEF is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and HSS Studentships are available on a +3.5 basis.

Eligibility

Awards are open to both home and overseas applicants, for both full-time and part-time study. The number of available awards will be confirmed at a later date. Under no circumstances can awarded Studentships be deferred. One award is ring-fenced for BAME candidates (UK/home fees only).

Value

annual stipend of c. £20,622 and fee waiver.

How to apply

Only students already in their 2nd year of the Mres programme or 1st year of the Ph.D programme at SEF can apply. Candidates wishing to be considered for this studentship must first consult their (potential) supervisors and the Deputy Director of Graduate Studies.

 

China Scholarship Council (CSC)

How to apply

The China Scholarship Council Scholarships cover up to four years of study. As the MRes+PhD programme is a 2+3 programme, CSC applicants are encouraged to apply for CSC funding in year 1 of the MRes (after admission onto the programme). Eligible applicants to the MRes programme should note on their QMUL application form that they are applying for a School studentship for year 1 of the MRes and that they intend to apply for CSC funding for the remaining four years of study.
