Science & Engineering Faculty: 'Gender-Diverse Voices - Expression and Perception' talk with Dr Victor Rosi (UCL)

A large rainbow flag is being carried overhead by a group of people walking down a city street during a parade. The fabric creates a colourful canopy in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, with participants visible beneath it and spectators lining the pavement in the background. The scene is lively and celebratory, capturing movement, community, and pride.

Date: Wednesday 25 February

Time: 3.00 - 4.00pm

Location: MB-503 (SMS)

‘The human voice conveys rich information about a person’s identity, including physical and social characteristics. Among these, gender is one of the most salient dimensions perceived from the voice. For cisgender men and women, vocal cues often align with their gender. In contrast, for transgender and non-binary individuals, vocal cues tend to diverge from binary vocal norms. This variability highlights the need for a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of voice gender. In this talk, I will present an ongoing research project examining both the perception and expression of gender-diverse voices. First, I will outline recent developments in the field and discuss their limitations. Then, I will introduce planned lines of investigation involving gender-diverse individuals such as self-voice perception, voice naturalness perception, and the representation of non-binary gender concepts (e.g., gender ambiguity, genderlessness). Through this project, I aim to contribute to the improvement in the representation of gender-diversity in voice research, voice technologies, and, more broadly, in society.’

The talk will be followed by a panel discussions and light refreshments.

All welcome!!
