Education

Queen Mary integrates sustainability and partnership principles across teaching and staff development. Both staff and students collaborate to advance the SDGs through education and global engagement.

Women in STEM Scholarship

In collaboration with the British Council, the Women in STEM Scholarships offers 5 scholarships to women from the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia specifically. The award covers full overseas tuition, a contribution towards monthly maintenance allowance travel, visa and other initial costs. The scholarship screening process specifically looks for applicants who can demonstrate a plan and passion to engage other women and girls in STEM from their home country.

Women in Economics and Finance Scholarship

The Women in Economics and Finance PGT Scholarship  is accessible regardless of nationality, offering 60 scholarships for overseas postgrad students. It accepted 21 for the September 2025 intake, and 18 so far for September 2026. Applicants must commit to engaging with women and girls in Economics and Finance for a total of 30 hours during their studies, through a range of avenues such as mentoring.

Gender Equality in our Curriculum

Queen Mary’s Inclusive Curriculum framework guides teaching and assessment design to ensure all students—regardless of background, gender or identity—can thrive. The framework emphasises student–staff collaboration, diverse voices and global perspectives within modules, and pedagogic practices that remove barriers and promote belonging. Through inclusive advising, mentoring and curricular design that reflects multiple identities, QMUL builds a learning environment where gender equality and broader equity are embedded into the academic experience.

qMentoring

The qMentoring programme has supported hundreds of students in receiving a mentor, with mentors from a wide range of employers including Deloitte, the Civil Service and NASA. In 2019 we launched a new strand of qMentoring, prioritising female Muslim students following analysis of graduate destination data which revealed that this student cohort underperforms in the job market six months after graduation.

Rise Up

Queen Mary’s Rise Up 2025 programme is designed for female students in Years 10-12, to inspire the future generation of women business and finance leaders. Attendees will get a taste of business and finance studies at Queen Mary, attend insightful talks from successful Queen Mary alumni, current students and student societies.

Girls Into Physics Summer School

Queen Mary’s Girls into Physics free three-day summer school invites Year 10 girls to participate in university-style lectures, practical lab work, and observatory tours, with live workshops on career pathways and gender stereotyping in STEM. By enabling participants to engage with female academics and overcome barriers, the programme promotes early inclusion of young women in physics and helps shift future participation.
