Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund Tissue Bank (PCRFTB)
The PCRFTB – the world’s first national pancreas tissue bank – is hosted and co-ordinated by the Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London, funded by Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (PCRF) and supported by a Human Tissue Authority licence from Barts Health NHS Trust.
In August, the PCRFTB was awarded the ISO 20387:2018 accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. This recognises a biobank’s commitment to rigorous standards in the collection, storage and use of biological materials. Of the UK’s more than 200 research biobanks, the PCRFTB is the first in England and only the second UK-wide to receive this accreditation
Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF)
The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) is a certification scheme designed to enable staff and students to understand and improve the sustainability and efficiency of their laboratory areas.
Over 40 labs have been awarded the LEAF accreditation across the university at either bronze, silver or gold. For example, the Barts Cancer Institute (BCI), Queen Mary University of London, has been awarded LEAF awards for sustainability, achieving Bronze or Silver certification standards across each of the 15 laboratory sections.
Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Research Advisory Group
The PPI Research Advisory Group brings together cancer researchers at Queen Mary and lived-experience advocates to co-design and steer research activities, ensuring that projects are relevant, inclusive and patient-centred. It elevates alternative perspectives from patients, carers and the public to refine research questions, study design and dissemination. By embedding this involvement into the institute’s governance and programme delivery, the research is more accessible and aligned with real-world needs.
Sexual and reproductive health care
Safe East runs a free, confidential drop-in sexual health testing clinic in the Queen Mary Student Health Service every month during term time. Testing is available to all students, regardless of whether you are registered with the Student Health Service.
Our Student Health service offers the following sexual health services:
- Advice about a full range of contraception and prescriptions
- Sexual health advice and care
- Emergency contraception
Students are also encouraged to learn more about consent through our online module, ‘Consent Matters’, on QMPlus to learn how to recognise and ask for sexual consent, look out for others on campus, and where to find support if needed.
Free Period Products
Queen Mary provides free period products across our campuses to ensure no one’s education or wellbeing is disrupted by period poverty. By offering accessible menstrual health support for students and staff, we’re helping to create a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate campus community.
Smoking on campus
Smoking is prohibited on all Queen Mary Campuses, and it only permitted in the designated smoking shelters. It is recognised that smoking is detrimental to health, and Queen Mary University of London (Queen Mary) will continue to promote the culture of a smoke-free environment across all its Campuses in the interests of individual and public health.
Queen Mary aims to comply fully with the Smoke-Free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations and associated Regulations introduced on the 1st July 2007, by prohibiting smoking in Queen Mary premises and other facilities covered by the legislation. We have a Smoking and Vaping policy, reviewed in March 2024, and due to be reviewed again in 2027.
Staff mental health support
Queen Mary offers a comprehensive staff wellbeing service, including a free, confidential Employee Assistance Programme, provided by workplace options, that covers mental, emotional, financial, and work–life challenges. The university provides accessible resources such as workshops, one-to-one counselling, online modules and manager guidance, ensuring that staff have tailored support wherever they are in their wellbeing journey.
