Knowledge Exchange Strategy

To foster a research culture with knowledge exchange at its heart, we commit:

To catalyse innovation, engagement and creative collaboration

As a hub of innovation, engagement and creative collaboration we attract, nurture and retain excellent talent and transform ideas into social and economic benefits by fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration among staff, students and partners.

To achieve this, we will:

  1. Ensure innovation, entrepreneurship and engagement are key aspects of our research culture and improve recognition and reward of knowledge exchange contributions through the academic performance system.
  2. Scale up entrepreneurship activities and enhance coordination across Queen Mary to foster and enable talented people to create new opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship as a career path for all research staff and students.
  3. Leverage partnerships between the Centre for Arts, Culture and Creative Collaboration and the creative industries, aiming to amplify their contributions to societal and community wellbeing.
  4. Advance Queen Mary's position as a leading institution in public engagement and champion the need for engaged universities.
  5. Continue to provide our Degree Apprenticeship programmes and life long learning opportunities in focused areas with strategically important partners to respond and align with the Government Skill Agenda and employers' needs.

To facilitate inclusive economic growth

Our people and partners make our institution a beacon of innovation and enterprise, fostering a dynamic ecosystem that drives inclusive economic growth.

To achieve this, we will:

  1. Scale up our innovation and commercialisation activities through Queen Mary to drive innovation and foster economic growth.
  2. Grow the support, structure and capital for social ventures to improve diversity in entrepreneurship and make a difference to communities locally, nationally and globally.
  3. Increase our engagement with businesses both directly and by making use of Innovate UK mechanisms that foster interaction e.g. collaborative R&D and KTP
  4. Advance Queen Mary's position as a leading institution in public engagement and champion the need for engaged universities
  5. Increase Queen Mary's engagement with SMEs through initiatives and internal networks to support their specific needs e.g. through free legal (qLegal) and financial (qNomics) advice and support for academic/ SME partnerships (Business Development)

To harness the strength of our partners and communities to drive meaningful and far-reaching impact

We are committed to using a place-based approach working closely with our partners and communities to meet their specific needs and maximise the benefit for society and the economy.

To achieve this, we will:

  1. Continue to build and sustain equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships with civic, community, policy and industry partners to deliver far-reaching value.
  2. Allocate Queen Mary Impact Funding to Knowledge Exchange activities aimed at building and nurturing a portfolio of projects that have the potential to deliver significant social and economic impact, in alignment with our Research Impact strategic goals.
  3. Embed Queen Mary's strategic role as an anchor institution in the East London in line with our priority themes in our Civic University Agreement, and engage with other anchor institutions and communities to achieve long-term and sustainable civic impact.
  4. Enhance Queen Mary's local, national and international leadership and reputation for innovation, engagement and impact.
